Good to Know

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most from parents.

When should my child have their first dental visit?+
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling a first visit by your child's first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth erupting โ€” whichever comes first. Early visits help us catch issues sooner and get your child comfortable with the dental office.
How often should my child see the dentist?+
Most children benefit from a checkup and cleaning every six months. Some kids with a higher risk of cavities or specific dental needs may need more frequent visits, which we'll discuss with you at your appointment.
Are baby teeth really that important if they'll fall out anyway?+
Yes โ€” baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth, support healthy chewing and speech development, and help guide the jaw's growth. Untreated decay in baby teeth can also affect the permanent teeth developing underneath.
How do you help kids who are nervous about the dentist?+
We use gentle, age-appropriate communication, go at each child's pace, and create a calm, welcoming environment from the moment you walk in. For children with significant anxiety or special needs, we tailor our approach individually to help them feel safe and supported.
What should I do if my child chips or knocks out a tooth?+
Call us right away at (929) 389-1663. For a knocked-out permanent tooth, keep it moist (in milk or saliva) and get to our office as quickly as possible โ€” timing matters. For baby teeth, it's usually not re-implanted, but you should still call so we can evaluate for other injuries.
Do you offer treatment for infants and toddlers?+
Absolutely. We welcome patients from their very first tooth through the teenage years, including infant oral exams, guidance on teething, and early cavity prevention.
What can I do at home to help prevent cavities?+
Brush twice daily with an age-appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste, help younger children brush until they have the dexterity to do it well on their own, limit sugary snacks and drinks, and keep up with regular checkups so we can catch any concerns early.
Does my child need a space maintainer if they lose a tooth early?+
It depends on the tooth and your child's age. If a baby tooth is lost well before the permanent tooth is ready to come in, a space maintainer may be recommended to prevent nearby teeth from shifting into that space. We'll let you know if it's needed at your visit.
